Preface

The primary purpose of the PMBOK® Guide (A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge) “is to identify and describe that subset of the PMBOK® that is generally accepted” (PMBOK® Guide 3) [1]. The PMBOK® Guide does so by presenting project management processes and their components arranged and explained according to set of nine project management “knowledge areas.”

The PMBOK® Guide provides a “basic reference for anyone interested in the profession of project management” (PMBOK® Guide 3). It also provides the basis for PMI® ‘s Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification and educational accreditation programs. However, the PMBOK® Guide itself does not provide a methodology that can be readily applied in an actual application area.

Since the publication of the PMBOK® Guide in 1996, numerous positive comments and recommendations for its improvement have been made. Over the years, I have come to understand that virtually all project managers are in need of a course that will help them interpret material presented in the PMBOK® Guide. Therefore, this book Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide has been written for the purpose of providing a tool for implementing a project management methodology that is consistent with the PMBOK® Guide. It is my hope that this book will help all project management professionals to better understand and use the PMBOK® Guide.

The PMBOK® Guide is an American National Standard for Project Management (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2000) as well as the world’s unofficial standard for project management. This fact motivated several authors to describe their experience with the PMBOK® Guide in presentations such as books, training programs and seminars. While the materials use, reference, interpret or suggest a need to change the PMBOK® Guide, Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide elucidates its details and exposes its application power. Although Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide does not compete with the examined materials, it does support, supplement and complement the examined materials.

The reader should note that Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide:

Completely relies on the PMBOK® Guide.

Does not question statements given in the PMBOK® Guide.

Comments on PMBOK® Guide statements only when absolutely necessary to continue the
           explanation of the PMBOK® Guide.

Contains substantial statements that are absolutely derived from the figures and the
associated text given in the PMBOK® Guide.

Therefore, Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide is not a critique of the PMBOK® Guide. It only focuses on the detailed explanation of the PMBOK®Guide by analyzing its processes and process relationships.

This analysis of the PMBOK® Guide is based on input and output relationships within each process and is used for assigning a sequence number to each output and input mentioned in the PMBOK®Guide. The resulting sequences represent measurable contribution of Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide to an explanation of the PMBOK®Guide.

Understanding the detailed sequences is necessary to improve planning, executing, controlling and measuring the performance of any project. Once reader learns the system described in Brainstorming The PMBOK® Guide, it will be possible to:

Deepen the understanding of the project management material described in the
           PMBOK®Guide.

Customize a project management methodology described elsewhere.

Apply the system to virtually any project regardless of project type or size.

While every attempt has been made to make the presentation clear, simple and sufficient, it does require some study and a good understanding of project management as a whole. The instructions on how to understand and apply the details of the PMBOK®Guide are not simple and, if this course in project management is to have practical benefits, reader is encouraged to make serious efforts at mastering the details.
